Augmented Reality.

No the top screen isn't out of focus! This is my brother's 3DS and when you don't view the top screen face-on it looks out of focus. After helping him to set it up this evening we went exploring the features. I've not had a huge amount of enthusiasm for the 3DS but I've always thought it was a good, gimmicky idea for a console. However, after playing with the console this evening I would have to say I'm rather impressed with the way in-console games have utilised the 3D effect.
