Look Behind You

There two different species of caracara found in the Falkland Islands.

The Johnny Rook (more properly known as the Striated Caracara) is very common across the Falklands but is really rare everywhere else. Given that there about 30 Johnny Rooks that usually loiter around the farm I'm staying on it is hard to believe that they are officially listed as "Near Threatened".

In much of South America the Southern or Crested Caracara is much more common, but not in the Falklands. This Crested Caracara is one of a pair that hangs around near the farm on Carcass Island. When it deigns to drop in and feed, all the Johnny Rooks stand back.
