The Cross
Afternoon all
HAPPY ST. ANDREW'S DAY !!!!
History lesson for today lol ;0)
St Andrew's cross, how did it become our National Flag, after all there is no biblical or scriptural proof that St. Andrew was crucified on the decussate- X shaped - cross.
It is stated however, that in 823, Angus, King of the Picts at Athelstaneford, East Lothian, who had been given St Andrews remains, was facing a fastly superior army of 'English'. Morning of the battle, he promised if he could have victory he would make St Andrew, Patron Saint of Scotland......he looked up at the sky, and the clouds had formed a cross on a blue azure sky.....this was taken as a sign, and he did get his victory and kept his promise.
'English at that time also included 'lowlanders'.......Scots living around the Border regions.....in those times, being 'Scots' was being in a different tribe from the Picts and the Celts. 'True' Scots wore their kilts and enjoyed the breeze.....so to speak!! ;0)
The Scottish Regiments of the British Army used to reflect this. Highland Regiments; Queens Own Highlanders, Gordon Highlanders, Black Watch and the Argyle and Southern Highlanders wore kilts. The Lowland Regiments; The Royal Scots, The Royal Highland Fusiliers and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers wore Tartan Trews ;0)
Nightshift tonight, 2 nightshifts then off for 10 days....think I'll manage them ok lol ;0)
Have a great evening ;0)
