Step Cautiously

Discounted

So I seriously cannot make up the crazy shit that happens in my life. It's too insane.

Today I went to get Boston Market for dinner because surprise, surprise I was not given a meal at home...

Anyway, I went to Boston Market and I got all the food shown on the receipt. Just for reference, I had left overs for a little while, too. I'm not a complete glutton. And you could totally tell that the guy checking me out was doing it in both senses of the word both for my order and my body (for those of you who didn't get it). So while he's ringing my order, all of a sudden I see a discount pop up. It confused me a bit, but I was like, eh, whatever, I'm cool with paying less since it is my money I'm using.

He finishes my order, I pay, end of story. But I get to my car and check the receipt because I wanted to see what the discount was for. Turns out I got the Senior Citizen discount. Just so you know, I'm 19 and I look like I'm only 16. So in no way did this kid think I was 65. Trust me, I have my bad hair days, but they are never that bad.

It kind of makes me wonder whether I got the discount because I was pretty or because the kid didn't know what he was doing and messed up.

And then, of course, that got me thinking about privilege and the course I took last semester, Prejudice of Politics. A huge part of the course was focused on this idea of privilege and what it gives those who fit that ideal "image" everyone seems to want to achieve.

Is it really fair that while I'm getting discounted food, some woman down the street can't feed her kids tonight because her food stamps ran out last week? And my question then becomes, how often does something like this happen?

Is it fair that pretty people get it easier? I mean, just look at the industry I want to go into when I get out of college; the media. Every where I turn I'm going to be facing rejection because my look and the company's look do not match. I'm going to be told constantly that I'm "too fat, too short, too high-pitched" yet some gorgeous, big-boobed blonde bimbo is going to walk into a casting directors office and before she even opens her mouth, she's going to land the role. She may have the intelligence of a pin, but as long as she can read and has a face that will boost ratings, not much else matters.

I bet I'm ten times smarter than most people who will get jobs over me. I'm not trying to be cocky, I'm really not that type of person. I'm actually as humble as they come, but I know that I'm smart and I deserve jobs that I'm not going to be given. My qualifications will be off the charts, but if I'm not what the company's "looking for" then I'm either going to get stuck behind a desk writing the bimbo's story, or I'm going to get thrown out on my ass to go find someone else with lower standards.

But hey, at least I know I can get a discounted meal at Boston Market!
