Tallinn, Estonia.
I took this picture because it looked interesting, but after some reflection (don't hurt me) on the walk back through Tallinn's old town, I realized that perhaps this picture could have some significance.
Estonia really interests me, because it's a country that is actually younger than I am. In the time that I have grown up, figured out what interests me and who I am, Estonia has been busy doing the same thing. What is Estonia? Who are Estonians?
In Norway, we studied something similar. Post-independence Norway was coming off a period of occupation similarly long as Estonia's. How it went about building a national identity, and what that national identity means now is a really fascinating topic for me. Estonia now finds itself early on in that same process, but with all kinds of unusual accelerants, like EU membership and the rapid implementation of capitalism.
The street this photo was taken on was controlled by a communist government just over two decades ago. Many of the people I meet here were alive during that past. Many weren't. It's a fascinating thing to think about, in a country that's my age.
