Historic Old Aberdeen
First of all a huge thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate my 365th yesterday. Your best wishes and comments were very much appreciated.
Old Aberdeen is now part of the city of Aberdeen but was originally a separate burgh, made into a burgh of barony on 26 December 1489. It was only incorporated into Aberdeen in 1891, by Act of Parliament.
The central part of the old town is a conservation area with streets paved with stone setts and rich in historical buildings, some dating back to the Middle Ages, most from the 17th-early 19th centuries. This building, until recently, housed the old town's public toilets. Now it is up for sale and we await with baited breath to see what the future holds for it.
Old public lavatories are surprisingly versatile buildings. I get my hair cut in a converted one in our local market town. The barber's name is Al and, I kid you not, his establishment when first opened was called simply "You're in Al's".
