Book club tomorrow - where does the time go!!
Haven't read much of note since the last meeting with the exception of this book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
It tells the life story of a woman born in Argentina in 1887 to Irish parents. Her life was eventful from the beginning and she was lucky to survive childhood.
She went on to be a stewardess and a VAD on a number of ships between 1908 & 1950. She survived the sinking of the Titanic and the hospital ship Britannic.
This is a fascinating story of a time when few women worked at sea, when sea voyages were for the very rich and people travelling to a new life across the oceans in difficult socio-economic times. She comes across as a hard-working, fun loving woman, who didn't take no for answer. I have a great admiration for strong women.
On the subject of the lives of women, two other books worth a read are:
Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi & Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
(provides you the opportunity to reflect on the lives we lead as women and the freedom we have, which at times we don't recognise or appreciate!!)
