As a woman couldn't be a postmaster...
This is really an emergency blip as I was going to do a rose but by the time I got to it the wind had blown all its petals off!
Instead you are getting this press cutting about Matterson Lightfoot who lived in our house and ran the village post office for an amazing 57 years before retiring aged 82. In the cutting he explains that the village post office had closed after the first World War and "they wanted to open another and couldn't find anyone to run it. They asked my wife, but as a woman couldn't be a postmaster in those days I agreed to take it on until someone could be found to do it full time."
Two things occur to me: 1. Why couldn't a woman be a postmaster? 2. Do you notice how nothing changes...someone takes on a job temporarily and then gets stuck with it permenantly, although not usually for 57 years perhaps!
Some people in the village still remember this house as the post office, although it later moved to the other end of the green. (The post office, not the house, obviously!)
