The name given to the fruit of the hawthorn in Ireland.
In Serbia and Croatia stakes made from the wood of the hawthorn are particularly useful for slaying vampires.
In Celtic folklore it heals the broken heart.
In Gaelic it is linked with fairies and it is bad luck to cut it down other when it is in bloom. Apparently the ill luck of the De Lorean car company was associated with the destruction of a fairy thorn to make way for a production facility.
So there you have it!

(thank goodness for wikipedia!)
