St Bernard's Well
This is St Bernard's Well in Stockbridge, reputedly discovered
by 3 boys from Heriot's Hospital and named after St Bernard
of Clairvaux who once lived in a cave nearby.
The statue is Hygeia, the greek goddess of hygiene and people
drank the water of this well to cure themselves of whatever ailed
them. The well water would cure scorbutic cases, hysterics,
hypochondria and scrofula. A seasons subscription in 1789 when
the pump house was first built cost 5 shillings which sounds like
quite a lot to me though if it cured so many ailments it was
probably worth it.
Hygeia would be horrified if anyone tried to drink the water today,
and to be honest, probably back in the 1780s as well. Nowadays
people just come to admire the eleborate pump house, and if it is
open which it is once or twice a year, the tiled mosaic in the room
inside.
