Red Squirrel numbers have declined in the UK for varying reasons, the Grey Squirreel being one of them. T he RSPP (Red Squirrel Protection Partnership) estimates 22,000 greys have been killed since 2007......It is only called the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership because if it were called The Grey Squirrel Annihilation League people might be less sympathetic. In the 20th century there were thriving populations of Reds across Britain and in some places they were classed as a pest. Between 1903 and 1933 The Highland Squirrel Club recorded the destruction of 82,000 Red Squirrels. During the middle ages if a person were Royal or a very noble lady one wore slippers made of Red Squirrel skin.......Maybe add humans as a contributing factor to the Reds decline !!!!!
