The Barracks
This Bernera Barracks, built in 1723, just 16 years after the Union of Scotland and England in 1707 and eight years after the first Jacobite rebellion.
They were designed and built by General Wade as the furthermost part of a network of forts, watch stations and roads built all over Northwest Scotland to subdue and control the Clans. The troops stationed here controlled the crossing to the Island of Skye and the Outer Isles.
The Nation Anthem used to have this verse which sort of sums up the relationship the British government had with this part of the world.
Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.
