Traces

My house is late Victorian and is 113 years old. The house has lots of traces of previous inhabitants which I could easily erase. This is the newel post at the top of the stairs, I imagine the two little holes once housed a hinge for a safety gate to stop small children falling down stairs.

I could easily erase these things but something else would be erased too.
