One more

Arrived in Lerwick this morning. I will be relieved here tomorrow and take the helicopter from Sumburgh to Aberdeen and one more flight to Amsterdam, so the next five weeks i will be at home. Since we have to wait for fresh provisions, fuel and repairs, I rented a car and drove through the countryside to the westcoast. A beautiful day and a happy 'End of this Trip' feeling.

Less happy is the story of this picture I took in Sandness Graveyard. It is a tribute to the gallant crew of the Stromness lifeboat and Aberdeen trawler, 'Ben Doran', which foundered on the terrible 'Vee Skerries' in March 1930. It took the lifeboat from Stromness in Orkney, 120 miles away, three days to reach the scene. But, despite being able to see the last crew members clinging to the rigging, neither they nor the local boats were able to effect a rescue due to the atrocious weather conditions. The stone says it all: Greater Love Hath No Man Than This.
