A Suffolk Eye

Just like the good old days..

Candel-light service at Walpole Old Chapel.

This isn't romance, but necessity: the chapel has no electric lights. In fact amenities in general are pretty sparse.

The chapel was created in the same year Charles 1 lost his head, which is when the Non-Conformists of Walpole clubbed together, bought an old farmhouse, gutted it, and used all the beams and floorboards to build a rough chapel inside. Galleries atop, big box pews downstairs and a lovely crooked pulpit with a wonky sounding board atop.

And as the Non-Conformists of Walpole have never had a penny to scratch with ever since it has remained just as it was.

The carol service requires coats, hats, scarves, and gloves (and in some cases, blankets too) and your breath puffs out in a cloud so you can practically see the icy letters of the words form as you sing them. And if you move a padded elbow too close to a candle flame who know what will happen?

The carol service only lasts a little over an hour and starts in broad daylight.

By the end its just like this..
