Goldcrest

This goldcrest was hopping up and down, fluttering its wings outside our window for a good ten minutes today. We've had chaffinches doing the same thing in the past - it must be that they catch a reflection of themselves and think its another bird. Amazing to get such a long, good close-up view, and a fantastic view of its bright yellow crest, which it seemed to be fanning out in some kind of display. I was able to get quite close, and it was taking no notice of me at all (apparently this is typical of goldcrests).

Goldcrest's are Britain's smallest birds. According to Mark Cocker in Birds Britannica, "there are at least four full-grown goldcrests to the ounce, while an individual weighs little more than a five pence piece".

Huw thought it looked like one of the angry birds...
