Just a trim?

As a small child, I used to dread a trip to the barbers. The noise of the electric clippers and the brusque atmosphere was terrifying. Perhaps I was picking up their dreadful history as early surgeons. I have read somewhere (not Wikipedia but a management textbook, I think) that, in the 16th century, the barber/surgeons were all, in effect, skilled manual workers, based in a barber's shop. But they were uneducated and had to be guided by a more learned person, who would read instructions aloud. In Latin, of which the barber/surgeons knew not a word. Sadly, the pictured example of a 21st Century barber only has a picture of the traditional red and white pole, designed to illustrate the blood and bandages.
