Winter garden

Portland has a number of community gardens around town. This one is at Sewallcrest, inner southeast. I used to garden here. There's a park adjacent to it and I'll always remember soft summer evenings, puttering in the garden with the sounds of kids playing baseball...the crack of the bat, the wild cheers and laughter. It was all part of the package - I'd walk home with a basket of fresh vegetables and feel so grounded and grateful for these simple gifts.
