The Longman of Wilmington

This human figure and a horse in the chalk about the River Cuckmere, form part of a circuit I regularly complete between Lewes, the South Downs and the sea. It has always struck me that to celebrate the New Millennium a new figure might have been created somewhere in the chalk, but I dare say a multitude of council committees would have got in its way.

Though lazy of me not to leave the car, I like the way a piece of barbed-wire intersects the frame, as if the character is behind a fence in a zoo or wild-life park.
