Stained glass

My lovely sis and I went to visit the walled city of Aigues-Mortes today in the Camargue. Just inside the ramparts (which we walked all 1.6 kilometres around) we found the old 13th century church, Notre Dame des Sablons. Bare stone walls, a high rustic, sturdy roof and the most amazing, modern, stained glass windows designed in the 1960's.
The artist Claude Viallat based his designs on the sponge patterns used to paint kitchens in the midi and the repetition of this simple design in its different colourways produces a breathtaking luminosity. The master glass-maker Bernard Dhonneur hand-blew them. Every window (and there are many) in this church is a variation of Viallat's design and the new techniques Dhonneur required to create them.
I've never seen anything quite so modern in an old church. One window yes, but all of them? What a brave decision.
This, along with watching flamingos stretching their wings while the sun set behind them, made for a perfect day. Thanks, Trish.
