Not Old Trafford.
England is the home of football. There is more organised football in England than anywhere else in the world and it is played at many levels. Here, in the northern English city of Sheffield where the game began, and less than a mile away from the oldest football ground in the world, a linesman trudges off the pitch after Nether Green under 13s entertained Wombwell in a December cup game at their moorland Bents Green home.
A cold, bleak and muddy affair, the fog meant that it was impossible to see both goals from anywhere on the pitch. Such inconveniences don't stop the game at this level. Nether Green lost 0-5 to a bigger Wombwell side. But it's three cheers from both sides at the end. After a short debrief in the mist the players go home in their kit in parents' cars for a warm shower and a bacon sandwich. The linesman will do the same and then go for a well-earned Sunday pint.
Scenes like this are played out every Sunday morning all over England. Every game requires an unimagined amount of organisation and preparation. No one is paid. It's about unsung enthusiasm.
It's about the love of a game...
