Have spent much of today hunched over computers and guide books plotting what now looks like being a late winter tour of northern Scandinavia.

After clocking up 20,000 airmiles getting to cold places down south just before Christmas, I'm planning a boat, train and bus jaunt round the north as my next trip.

My biggest frustration: there isn't any way of going north (or even east) from Shetland without coming a long way south first. Bring back the Smyril Line boat.
