Not Africa....

There's something about this photograph which brings to mind the African savannah - perhaps the earthy brown colours, the sense of space or the lone tree. In fact this is a view across an organic farm west of Peterborough. The lone tree is an oak, and it is surrounded by a small area of grassland, set-aside as a wildlife reserve.

The organic husbandry definitely seems to benefit the local wildlife. It's one of the few places where large flocks of starlings can be seen regularly, and today they were joined by a noisy crowd of fieldfares, whose 'chack-chack' call gives away their presence long before they can be seen. There was also a buzzard sitting on the ground in the distance, possibly demolishing some prey.

As we move into 2012 it would be good to think that wildlife and the environment would gain an even higher profile in government policy. However, I fear that the wider economic situation may lead to an erosion of wildlife protection that may be difficult to reverse. We all need to be vigilant, and make our voices heard if this should be the case. We do have the means to make a difference!

Anyway I hope the New year brings all blippers peace, happiness and good health, as well as plenty of good photo opportunities! :)
