Setting Up!
This image was taken approximately 120' above, and a couple of thousand yards off the coast near Maverick's Beach. These waves have begun "setting up" which will undoubtedly provide momentum for the upcoming world class surfing contest in Northern California. During the winter, off-shore storms create waves as large as 30' tall and typically from 14 to 20 feet swells. Pro surfers and referees were out in boats measuring wave height and mapping the locality for the surfing championship today. They will be out on the water until they announce the start of the competition. As this goes on, professional surfers from around the world come to prepare. Today, in preparation for the start, a spectator safety presentation was offered and the waves began to build, or "set up." It won't be long before the games begin...
