The grandeur of days gone by

In the 19th century, the Midi was rolling in money from the sale of cheap wine to northern France. Successful winemakers built handsome houses like this one. The pin parasol (umbrella pine) is emblematic of the south. It doesn't show in the picture, but it was blowing a gale when I took this.
