Ashby de la Zouch Castle is in Leicestershire in the East Midlands of the UK. The castle itself is in ruins but has a noble history, featuring also in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Ivanhoe".

We set out this morning to walk in a National Forest park called Conkers. We had only seen it signposted and knew nothing about it. So we were rather surprised to find that it was a rather dull attempt at a pleasure ground, with a short track round a part of the Ashby Canal and was rather unkempt and dismal on this dull January day.

We also bumped into a rather dull and unkempt dog walking round. His owner spoke sharply to him, telling him not to speak to us as we were strangers !

In need of a cup of tea, we headed off, and passed Ashby Castle before arriving at Staunton Harold - where we will return as there is a fascinating church and house to explore later in the year
