Kerkenberg

Under the leadership of Piet Retief the Voortrekkers decided to trek into KwaZulu-Natal to acquire land and grazing for their cattle. Reverend Erasmus Smit called this area Kerkenberg because it reminded him of a church or a place where religious gatherings could have be held. The Retief trek-party remained at this rock till 13 November 1837.
