Machu Pichu
Wow what a day. Early start, bleary eyed, down to the the access control to queue for entry into the controlled area of Machu Pichu. 50 minute hike to the sun gate only for both the sunrise and more importantly Machu Pichu to be covered in cloud.
The tension in the 80* or so of us who were gathered there was palpable.
(* there were only 16 in our group who trekked together, but all the groups who were due to arrive that day obviously did so early with the same thought of us in mind)
There were renditions of "I can see clearly now" and "sunshine, lollipops and rainbows" while we all waited together for the cloud to move.
Eventually the cloud lifted and we were presented with the amazing vista of the lost city of the Incas. Well worth the hard work, lack of oxygen and lack of proper showers.
After exploring we headed back to Cusco had a long hot shower and celebrated NYE with our trekking buddies. We managed to keep our eyes open until 12 but not much longer.
A long lie was due the next day.
