800 Wood
One project to mark the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge here was to plant 800 Wood. This is an ex-arable field near Madingley and is adjacent to the ancient Madingley Wood SSSI here. A wide variety of native species have been planted including oak, ash, hazel and rowan.
At present the site looks more like an orchard than a wood but as the trees grow a more natural arrangement will be created out of those that are successful. The expectation is that the native ground flora will also invade from the site of the SSSI.
