Confused fish
This a detail from one of the rather handsome lamp posts on the bridge across the Tweed in Peebles. I presume the fish is to represent a salmon, for which the river is famous. However the side detail are carvings of large sea scallop shells. It looks suspiciously like the old lamp posts that used to characterise Poole in Dorset, on the Channel coast, to celebrate its nautical links. (Poole Council, in a fit of modernisation, saw fit to remove them some years ago, and replace them with modern banality).
Was this design produced, en masse, in some Midlands Foundry, early last century?
Two male pheasants were squaring up to each other in the field this morning. Their spring passions may be cooled by the colder weather coming soon.
