Remains of a Tragedy
A true American Dream. A beautiful mansion, 3 car garage, brick facade, only now filled with the feeling of dread and the smell of wet ash.
I came because its image flashed in front of me as I sped by. I took a step inside, already trembling a bit. My feet let me take a step inside, my jaw drops. In front, a collapsed living room, nothing left. I expected 2 floors, now there are none when there were three. I glance to the side, my jaw drops further, a baby crib splashed with ash and rubber stands alone against a wall. Some toys pushed against a far side wall. A chandelier hangs only from the bare wood that once supported a floor above.
I try to concentrate, capture the feel, the stairs at least as they are filled with dirt and scum. But I can not. I'll need to return. For now I'll walk with my dog and breathe again.
Constructive criticism is always appreciated.
