Hunting For Oil
Nice day for a wander down by the shore at Leith.
Planned to blip the bridge. But wasn't too impressed with any of my shots of it.
So, instead, I present this harpoon gun... with the bridge in question in the background!
From a sign that is next to the gun, it states that it was used to hunt whales.
It came off a whalecatcher ship, registered in Leith, sometime in the early 20th century. Whales were hunted for their oil used to make soap, margarine(!) and glycerine for explosives. Apparently there were fleets of ships dedicated to producing this vital resource.
