Lazybeds

In past times the crofters of Lewis (and other Hebridean islands), trying to make a living from the impoverished land, would dig trenches of soil and pile it up alongside, to make strips where there was enough depth of soil to grow vegetables... these were called "lazybeds" and remnants of them can still be seen all over the island.
