Manukau Heads Lighthouse
Decided to have an exploring day today with my dear friend Mrs Dessert (*not her real name but she's known as this due to my amazing poetry) and her children. I had never been out to this lighthouse before, but it is well worth the very long trip.
It is a replica of the original, but just fab as you can climb up inside it for the cost of a donation, if you are so inclined (I was! Well worth helping to maintain the upkeep).
There is a signal man who lives up here, as the sand bar out there is lethal and moves regularly. His dog came and said hello, just in case we had any food going spare.
This sand bar is the site of one of NZ's worst marine disasters when it claimed the HMS Orpheus, along with 189 of the 265 people on board back in 1863. When it ran aground on the sand bar, the conditions were clear and sunny. This spot is still used for boats that come into Auckland via Onehunga.
More info on the lighthouse and the HMS Orpheus can be found here
This is my 200th blip! Really enjoying the experience of being here so far, and the fact that as someone who knows NOTHING about photography, I feel like I am learning some stuff. There's some AMAZING talent on here.
