A Rose Amid the Weeds
In the mid 1800's Middlesbrough was a thriving town. Today the legacy of the town's riches lies in its fabulous buildings. Many of them have beautiful stained glass windows.
The picture shows the clock tower of the town hall. The foundation stone for the building was laid in1883 and in 1889 the works were completed. The façade of the building was decorated with a number of statues including Justice, St George and the dragon and figures representing painting and music as well as a ship to mark the maritime trade of the town. The clock has a striking bell that weighs 2 tons.
I go to Middlesbrough quite a lot as my son is at Teesside Uni - they have a good reputation for computer courses. Hope the history lesson has not bored you too much. The rest of the place-other than the historic buildings -is not picturesque at all, hence the title.
