The Migrating Flamingos

After such a spectacular finish to our day with our sunset blips, desertcamel and I set off in search of Ras Sanad Mangrove - because I want to see some different birds instead of the usual sea birds. No roads are straight here and the particular road we were looking for just didn't exist on the garmin. The GPS co-ordinates led us to a compound nowhere near where we should have been.

On route was pass lots of little estuaries where the flamingos have come to roost for the winter. We stopped off at Tubli beach and spotted a nice big grey heron, the usual Arabian Reef heron, gulls and terns, a few sandpipers and last but not least the greater flamingos which are always very pleasant on the eye. They do tend to wander off as soon as you come anywhere near so not easy for close up shots.

After that we did an about turn and retraced our steps to find the mangrove. Not a pretty site as it was at the end of a blag flag village and sadly neglected. In amonst all the debris we spotted a little dam and lots of green bush which must have a hive of birding activity in them, but not being birders we identified the big easy ones like the egrets and herons. Apparently birding does not have a huge following here in Bahrain but I'm determined to get to know a few more birds before I leave.

More adventures to follow....
