Our life in the Borders

Winter reflections

I recently read an article about 'Zero Footprint Photography' (Ted Leeming and Morag Patterson, Outdoor Photography, Christmas issue) about shooting many different images, over time from one location. While not being quite as purist as this, I've decoded to focus on one small area to track it through the year. After some research, I've found my location - two pools set among the forest of Glentress, with plenty of varied plants and trees.

This is a first attempt. I have photos of the verdant green moss that covers the tops of some broken down dry stone walls, and of a scattering of unseasonable gorse flowers, growing on a south facing slope. There are bare tree trunks, with patterned bark (must get better at tree identification) . As a blip, however, I've used a photo of the pond, still half frozen. For me, it catches the stillness and bareness of the January scene.

I started out in watery sunshine, but by the time I turned to go back there was a mix of rain and sleet coming down. I huddled my coat round my camera, (must protect that) and scurried back to the car.
