Gold Glass Medallion early 300s
This was made in the early 300s probably in Alexandria.
It is a beautiful miniature of a fashionable women of the 4th Century and her son.
The son wears a large gold neck ring which is associated with Alexandria.
This is said to have been found in Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli and was gift of the millionaire J. Pierpoint Morgan to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1917. It now resides in the Coptic Egyptian room under the main entrance stairs at the Met, just off the very wonderful Late Roman and Byzantine corridor.
