Between fen and mountains

Boats in winter

There are not many places to go for a walk or a ride near here that do not involve long straight roads and open, flat fields. This is one location close by which offers a different perspective. The sluice gates at Surfleet Seas End mark the boundary between the managed levels and the tidal river. Several boats are moored up for winter and some seem abandoned. Do not be fooled by the reference to the sea. The sea is still a few miles away and excited children who have come for a picnic with buckets and spades at any of the Seas Ends around here have been disappointed. Nor is Surfleet Seas End very near the village of Surfleet, just as Gedney is not very near Gedney Dyke or Gedney Hill or Gedney Drove End or Gedney Marsh. In fact, they are separated by 10 or more miles. Strange place the fens.
