The Beaney Institute

This is Canterbury library, more formally known as what the title says or The Beaney Project.

It's the city's main library, art gallery and museum which was opened to the public in 1899, costing £15,000, £10,000 had been given to the project by Dr James George Cooper and the City Council gave a further £5000 so the building could accommodate the City's existing museum and library (built in 1825).

The art gallery is home to local artists Thomas Sidney Cooper and his relatives Thomas George Cooper and William Sidney Cooper.

The building has been closed since February 2009 and is expected to open this summer. It was granted £6.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, altogether the task of renovating the building has come to around £11.5 million.
