burdock, arctium, has been used throughout the ages for food and medicine. the prickly heads were the inspiration for velco. george de mestral, a swiss inventor, looked at the prickly heads under a microscope and saw the hook and loop system the plant uses to attach to animals and humans to disperse its seed.
