Sic a Parcel of Rogues!
Here are my three volumes of Burns . Underneath, the copy I gave my father on his 70th birthday as a tiny repayment for all that he had given me by introducing me to this literary genius and champion of social justice and national identity. He had first read to me from the battered blue volume which had accompanied him on H.M.S. Berwick and Sheffield in 1943 - 1945. At the front is the volume he gave me when I was sixteen.
My favourite poem is Sic a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation and I would like you to have heard Michael Marra's version which is currently playing on a loop in GOMA at the entry of the Alasdair Gray exhibition. It makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Sadly, I cannot find it anywhere on Youtube, but The Corries (Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson, composer of Flower of Scotland) offer a quietly angry version of it.
