St. Brigid's Cross
I was asked to teach a group of women how to make st. Brigid's crosses . It went well - it's really very easy to do. You need to bend and interlink fresh rushes in a certain pattern ,then tie the four shafts of the cross, trim the ends. One in your house is said to bring prosperity and health to the household...
St Brigid figured in pre -christian times (presumably without the saintly prefix)
and she was adopted by christianity. There are lots of stories concerning her exploits.. ..She was sitting by her dying father, who was a pagan, she picked up some rushes and made the cross to try to illustrate her faith to her father, and maybe to convert him ....Another story goes that she was due to marry someone of her father's choosing, prised her eye out to make herself unattractive to her suitor , then after he left she put her eye back in place and devoted her life to her god.
February 1st is St .Brigid's Day, and there's often a Biddy Ball (Big party) to celebrate.
