Selkie in the making...

Ceramics class has started up for the new term. I spent a blissful 2 hours playing with clay...
Here is the start of a Selkie being formed out of clay suitable for Raku firing. We're going to fire several pieces outside (in the garden) once the weather improves. The firing is very "hands on", involving a series of bins - the pieces being heated to firing point, then lifted to the next for smoking. Ritual/additional materials can be added to this smoking process and it all becomes very experimental!
The Selkie is made of 2 pieces - the seal & the woman - which will be pegged together with a wire "dowell". They will be then be bound with either copper/silver wire, or maybe a red linen thread after firing, to represent their being 2, inextricably linked aspects of a whole .
The finished piece should be kind of browns with random smoked patterning and slightly melted metal binding with a crusty metal peg. Well, something like that, anyway!
