Grumpy

This is one of the ten judges of hell. In Japanese Buddhism, they receive the souls of the deceased and decide on their future incarnation. I think he looks a bit grumpy. This could be because someone has nicked his left hand.

This is from the Japanese gallery in the V&A. It was carved sometime between 1600 & 1700.
