Gingerbread
So, following yesterday's blip which featured a 150 year old (or thereabouts) piece of notepaper with recipes on it, today I made the gingerbread using the recipe. It turned out rather well I think - firm on the outside and a bit gooey in the middle. Not particularly healthy - it requires a whole can of black treacle and a bag of demerara - but delicious if you have a sweet tooth. It did feel a little weird to be following a recipe carefully written down by a person unknown sometime in the early Victorian era.
A bit of an update from yesterday: Ellie spotted there is a watermark on the notepaper: "A Pirie and Sons" and Google tells me that this Aberdeen firm were indeed manufacturing paper in the nineteenth century - in fact the papermill is apparently still there and still in production.
