They're Running

Opening Day at Rillito Race Track. Historic for being the first quarter horse racetrack in the U.S., and creating the photo finish. No one would mistake her for Churchill Downs. She's too earthy. With her peeling paint, and crumbling cement. Unfortunately, she lives under the threat of closure because she sits on prime real estate near the center of the city. Rillito is under a reprieve until 2014, then who knows.

Today I pressed against the rails with the owner of the quarter horse 'I Ain't Lyin'. Their filly ran second for most of the race, but pushed hard at the end to win. We hooped and hollered, and I watched as they stepped into the winners circle. And all this for $5.00.
