New lens!

So today was quite good, drank coffee, took photos, the usual sunday... except... new lens! i got a rather wonderful Tokina RMC 400mm f5.6 lens of eBay for $92! :D

Tokina RMC 400mm f5.6 lens mini-review:

First Impressions; For a 25 year old lens, this one is in amazing condition, very little external wear, the only thing that isn't perfect is the slightly bent lens hood, the optics are completely dust & scratch free which is amazing considering most lenses nowadays come with dust inside it from the factory.
Focus ring has smooth and precise motion, the aperture ring moves and clicks into place well. the included tripod mount is also in perfect condition.
New, this lens would have been about $2,500 in today's money. I managed to get it used for $92.

Automation: The fact it is only manual focus doesn't bother me so much, but the camera i have is just a model down from the ones that allow for manual lens data, in simple terms, the higher up cameras give you an indication of what the correct exposure should be. however, with my camera it is all manual. bit of a pain.

Build quality: Made in Japan. Built like a tank crossed with a precision microscope.

Image quality: For a lens of it's age, and the fact it's a telephoto, and the brand of it (the identical Nikkor lens sells on eBay used today still for about $1000+, it does have far superior optics. but this was less than a tenth of the price.) i wouldn't rate it too bad.
Compared to the other optics i own however this is by far the worst, it has a very large amount of chromatic aberration & it's very soft at f5.6. f8 through f16 it's a fair bit better, but still not anywhere near as sharp as even my Nikkor tele lens.
It's sharpest when focused close, the further out you focus the sharpness seems to decline.
It seems to only be single coated, not multicoated?. or uncoated for that matter..

Conclusion: So it is a little low on the image quality side of things, but i didn't feel like (nor could i) fork out $1000+ for the Nikkor lens with the same specs.
I think it'll will be a useful tool though, it'll just take a bit of tweaking to get the best results out of it.

Rating 5/10.
