Thinking Place
Or phrontistery, as my old friend Anthony might have suggested. I have a number of these spots, where I occasionally drive and park, to unfold a laptop and tinker with poems, or just stare at the sea and, well, think. Though all of these places have views of the sea (as the names, Seapoint, Blackrock and Sandycove attest) this is the most clearly scenic and panoramic. Normally a little too far from where we live, in Blackrock, it is the place I come to now that my mother is being held over nearby, in her nursing home in Dalkey, for longer than the usual fortnight. She is very tired and weak. As she says, 'all I do is sleep.' We don't know how long this present state will continue. Everything seems on hold, including this seascape I have sat and watched darkening these last few evenings.
