Culloden House Hotel
Last week I used a blip of their dovecot but today went back and got a picture of the house itself. It's now one Inverness's more exclusive hotels. I think it might look better at this time of year as the texture of the stone is clearer without the green foliage although you can see the stems. At the time of the '45 rebellion Duncan Forbes was Lord Chief Justice of Scotland but was unhappy about the way the clansmen were treated in the aftermath and asked for greater leniency towards them. An attitude which found him no favours from the Royal Court. The house was extensively renovated in the 1770s by his grandson Arthur under the influence of Robert Adam. Robert Adam was under a contract for work on Fort George about 5 miles away which may explain how they came to meet. The house is now a hotel. This image shows the two pavilions to left and right but a larger image of the main house is here. The house by the way is in the village of Culloden but the battle took place on Culloden Moor about a couple of miles to the south on higher ground.
